THINGS TO DO
POINT DUME STATE BEACH AND ZUMA BEACH
30000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265-3601
Make the drive past Will Rogers and Surfrider beaches and you'll be rewarded with a clean, wide patch of sand and surf at Zuma. This Malibu beach accommodates crowds with plenty of on-site parking (pay at the lot or park for free along PCH) and lifeguards on duty. Directly to the south, you'll find Point Dume State Beach, with both hikers and climbers scaling its iconic namesake rock face.
EL MATADOR STATE BEACH
32215 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265-2529
Small, beautiful and dominated by rocky outcrops, El Matador looks not unlike a European beach. Wear shoes and don't bring too much gear; the western Malibu beach is only accessible via a steep gravel path. There are no lifeguards or other facilities, but it's the perfect spot to spread your towel in the cupped hands of the rocks—just watch out for high tide when sand comes at a premium. Arriving early or staying late should reward you with a memorable dawn or sunset.
LEO CARRILLO STATE PARK
35000 West Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA 90265
Covering a two and a half miles of rugged shore and beach, this park has opportunities for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, and surf fishing. North Beach at Leo Carrillo State Park is a wide family-friendly and dog friendly beach in western Malibu. In between North Beach and Leo Carrillo’s South Beach there is a rocky area known as Sequit Point which has tide pools and coastal caves to explore – both are best at low tide. North of North Beach the state beach continues to Staircase Beach, a narrow beach that is popular with surfers.
MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK
1925 Las Virgenes Rd, Calabasas, CA 91302-1909
With dramatic gorges, open pastures, lush forests, hidden pools and jagged peaks, Malibu Creek is simply one of the most stunning spots in Southern California. The Santa Monica Mountains space is filled with scenic trails and, since this is still L.A., a bit of silver screen history: you can spot remnants of the M*A*S*H set and splash in the rock pool that was featured in Planet of the Apes.
TOPANGA STATE PARK
20829 Entrada Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90290-3529
Featuring 76 miles of trails, Topanga State Park is sometimes credited as "The largest state park within a city limit in the U.S." Topanga State Park preserves over 11,500 acres of the Santa Monica Mountains in a beautiful area north of the Pacific Palisades, east of Topanga Canyon, and south of Reseda. Enjoy ocean views from chaparral-covered ridges or relax in shaded oak groves.
SOLSTICE CANYON
3455 Solstice Canyon Rd, Malibu, CA 90265
Solstice Canyon offers an easy walk alongside a flowing creek in a wide canyon. The big attraction on this 2.6-mile round trip hike is a small waterfall next to interesting ruins. Solstice Canyon is a great venue for a picnic and a stroll. The wide trail is so level it can be walked in flip-flops, making this one of the most family-friendly hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains.
THE GETTY VILLA
17985 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, CA 90265-5708
In 1974, oil magnate J. Paul Getty opened a museum of his holdings in a faux villa on a Pacific Palisades clifftop. Eventually the decorative arts and paintings were moved to the Getty Center, and the villa was closed for conversion into a museum for Getty's collection of Mediterranean antiquities. Today, there are roughly 1,200 artifacts on display at any one time, dated between 6,500 BC and 500 AD, and organized under such themes as "gods and goddesses" and "stories of the Trojan War." Even if you're not interested in the art, the palatial courtyards and manicured gardens are worth the visit alone.
LOCAL BREWERIES
MALIBU WINES/MALIBU WINE SAFARIS
31740 Mulholland Hwy, Malibu, CA 9026
The picturesque vineyard and tasting room boasts plenty of lawn space for picnicking (you can bring in food, but no alcohol); themed events include Friday-night karaoke, Sunday yoga and mimosas and Thursday movie screenings; and the pours behind the bar are fast and plentiful.
Looking for something a little more adventurous? Malibu Wine Safari combines the experience of a zoo and winery on their two-hour nature tour, where you'll get to personally feed animals while stopping to taste various wines from Saddlerock Ranch.
MALIBU COUNTRY MART AND MALIBU LUMBER YARD
The Malibu Country Mart encompasses 6 acres of land in the heart of the Malibu Civic Center and comprised of high-end retail, dining, and service providers. Its buildings are a mix of architectural styles, displaying Spanish, Mediterranean, modern, and rustic influences. Other features of the property include unique gardens and sculptures, outdoor dining and picnic areas, and a children's playground.
Steps from the Malibu Country Mart is this newer 'lifestyle mall' done up in teak and rusted metal. With an upscale line-up of fashionable stores, unique boutiques and gorgeous grounds, it’s a great place to spend the day. After you’ve gotten your shopping in, don’t miss the aquarium, which is the largest outdoor freestanding aquarium in Los Angeles. Then, head to the many retail shops and restaurants that make up the charm of the Malibu Lumber Yard. P.S: we love the signs reading 'paparazzi-free zone.'
